Art & Design

Key Stage 1

We follow the School Curriculum set out by the Department for Education (http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/teachingandlearning/curriculum/primary/b00198792/art/ks1)

In Early Years and Key Stage 1 the children follow a two year rolling programme. They develop their Knowledge, Skills and Understanding through the following topics:

Academic Year R & 1

Light and Dark – In Reception, we use differing colours and shades to create a self-portrait. In Key Stage 1, we learn about Van Gogh and his creation of a ‘Starry, Starry Night’. The children layer light shades of colour upon a dark canvas.

Wonderful Witterings – We use view finders and digital media to explore our local environment and record what we can see through observational sketches and drawings.

Houses and Homes – We investigate materials and explore techniques to create collages and weavings to make furnishings for the home.

Academic Year 2

Eat It – In Reception, we use differing colours and shades to create a self-portrait. In Key Stage 1, we create self-portraits inspired by Archimoldo, using fruit and vegetables to create an image of a face. We also develop our sculpturing skills by forming clay fruit and vegetables.

Happy Holidays – We use a variety of implements to create a holiday scene through print making.

Amazing Animals – We explore natural forms through observational drawings, which could include studying the shells and bones of animals.

Key Stage 2

Amazon Adventure – We explore and study the work of Henri Rousseau using pastels.  Continue developing our skills of sculpture by creating imaginary insects.

Academic Year 4

Fire and Ice – We develop our painting skills through colour mixing, tone and shade, hot and cold colours. We will learn about pattern and texture through paper collage.

Raiders and Invaders – We experience tactile art through making clay figures.

Our Precious World – We develop our drawing skills by sketching with pencils and painting with water colour.
